Igor Jesus has now notched 11 goals in every tournament for the club this campaign.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • Igor Jesus' fifth goal in Europe puts the team in command.
  • Forward adds a third with a sharp finish in the latter period.
  • The midfielder rounds off a excellent performance with a spot-kick.

Igor Jesus scored twice as Nottingham Forest rounded off the group stage of the European competition with a comfortable triumph against Ferencvaros at the City Ground.

Forest had previously guaranteed a place in the next qualifying round and entered this fixture with a small chance of making the league's elite, although they needed several results to fall in their favor.

That did not happen but this confident performance will give Forest fans belief that their side can navigate the home-and-away tie to advance to the last 16.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the upright with a header inside the opening stages for the away team – who are managed by former Tottenham striker Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

Forest broke the deadlock in the 17th minute when a delivery from midfield was deflected in by the defender and added a second shortly after – Jesus squeezing a shot in at the back post for his tenth strike of the campaign.

Jesus' 11th came early in the second half when he made a perfectly-timed run to escape the backline and then place a shot past the shot-stopper.

That goal ended Ferencvaros' aspirations of making a comeback and instead Forest added a fourth when the excellent James McAtee converted a penalty after a infringement by the hapless Bence Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition qualifying round draw takes place on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the result, there was that atmosphere about it. I want these guys to do collectively well, the whole squad," said Forest boss Sean Dyche.

"That was another stride forward, but it is a good step."

Team Breakdown: Jesus Catches Eye as Recent Arrival Watches On

Jesus has been a standout performer for Nottingham Forest in Europe this term with six of his 11 goals scored in the tournament.

His brace also means he has scored three goals in his last two games and the threat of competition for his place in attack could be providing motivation.

Napoli striker Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was watching this match from the stands.

That may well have been on the striker's mind as he was outstanding against the opposition, delivering two excellent goals and overall being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his speed and runs.

Jesus was not the only one in catching the eye, with James McAtee producing his finest display in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City last summer, while Dan Ndoye also performed well.

Such positive showings will give Forest some fresh hope as they switch focus to pulling further away from the Premier League relegation zone when they welcome Crystal Palace on the weekend.

"The minimum requirement is a response," added Dyche.

"I have always trusted their work ethic or their dedication or honesty. It is just go and show your ability.

"McAtee was very good and Dan was incredibly lively. Igor got another two and these are positive indicators."
